Book Launch Week!

It is here! You thought I'd forgotten, didn't you? Come on ... be honest. Ha! I didn't forget. Just thought I'd leave it late today, to see if you were paying attention. You were. Well done! Here is your prize.

To celebrate the week in which my book will be launched (at some point between now and the 6th, inclusive) I'm giving away a writerly pressie. Behold ...

When I wrote my post about pens, I noticed that the name 'Parker' came up often. I also noticed that gel pens were much spoken about. People got quite excited about the idea of pens. I even received emails on the subject. It only seemed right that I should combine the elements of 'Parker' and 'gel' and buy you a Parker Gel pen to thank you for your support, so I did.

How can you win it?
  1. Follow this blog - visibly - by clicking the follow button and/or subscribe by putting your details in the box to the right, or at the top.
  2. Leave a comment below this post saying whether you followed, subscribed, or both.
  3. One of the characters in Palaces & Calluses is a dog. He's a Border Collie called Pebble, but everyone calls him 'Rock'. In your comment, tell me something about a dog you've known. It can be something funny, lovely, or annoying. I'll pick a short-list of five, throw the names in a hat, and whichever name I draw... gets the pen!

The more comments there are, the more likely I am to give away even more prizes, so tell your chums, and ... good luck!

Consider yourself followed, Rebecca. A dog story? Okay. We once knew a dog named Lupa, a beautiful red-headed Golden Retriever. In theory, Lupa belonged to dear friends, but she visited us often, spent holidays with us -- even took a weekend trip to Washington State with us once. Mostly, though, we walked together, at Duke Point (south of Nanaimo). There was one spot along the walk where my husband would throw a tennis ball over a sloping cliff to the water. Lupa would follow the ball and fetch it wetly back. If my husband wasn't quick enough to take the ball from her and throw it, Lupa would simply do it herself. We called her game Doggy Solitaire. She would go to the edge of the cliff and carefully send the ball rolling. When it reached the water, she would barrel down the cliff after it, then bring it back, roll her eyes at us, and drop the ball. We were sure she was saying "Do I have to do it all myself?"

I LOVE the idea of Doggy Solitaire! Fab story. Thanks for sharing it. Rob, the dog Rock was based on, used to do something similar with the stairs. He'd throw things down them, run down the stairs and bring them back to the top. If he was cross, and we were out, he'd do this with the remote control for the television.

Well, I never had a dog of my own until after my divorce....my daughter wanted one so I bought a Tibetan spaniel...he outlasted a couple of short lived attempts at another relationship...I got so close to him, my daughter calls him my boyf...riend...after another failed attempt at a relationhship, I bought a companion for that dog...I tried again with someone else whom I didn't know didn't like dogs...his last girlfriend used to eat them in her country, if that tells you something...he wanted me to put my two down in the cellar when he visited....I decided I'd put him in the cellar (didn't) before I'd put the two best friends I'd ever known ever down there...your book sounds interesting to me!See more

My friend always used to tell her dog to "Sickem!" every time she saw me. All the dog (Flopsy, who looks kind of like a Kangaroo in dog form) would do is bark and run and jump up on one time. Then when going to her house one time she just came up to me and took a chomp on my leg. They haven't said Sickem since. I always knew there was a reason I had been slightly scared of dogs. Now whenever I see her I am nervous her dog is going to attack me again! Buh... I am just a wuss really and Flopsy has been forgiven. Plus she looks like a Kangaroo which just makes it really hard to be mad at her XD

This contest is SO easy to win at the moment. I looked up this pen on the interwebs and it's selling for over £20. It's a lovely pen. Want it? Leave a little note about your dog, or a dog you once had, or met. The best ones will go in a hat (not the dogs. The stories) and I'll pull a name out and send the pen. EASY! Don't be intimidated. Just write something like:

'I once had a dog called ---- and s/he used to ---- which I thought was really ----' or something. I'm not that fussy. No grammar naziness here. Just tell me something fab.

GOOD LUCK!

When I was a little girl we had a border collie called Bobby. I used to bang on my toy piano and sing Bobby Shaftoe's Gone to Sea whilst he yowled in accompaniment. I'd forgotten that until now - thanks for bringing back a lovely memory.

There is a family who live opposite me who have a large dog, dont know what breed it is, but as soon as he hears a siren (which could be miles away) he starts howling and crying. As soon as it has gone, he is fine

Rebecca, I've followed you ever since I read your article in Writing magazine about getting into twitter. You have inspired me to see myself as a 'writer' and took the trouble to offer me words of encouragement and read my blog, even though thousands of people follow you.

I have a little dog called 'Eddie' named after a WWE wrestler (by my son, a big WWE fan) even though he hard looks anything like one. He's a little Lhasa Apso. And he's obsessed with socks. He pulls them off our feet, hides them all over the house. Tips over the laundry basket looking for them and he carries a sock in his mouth when he is walking around the garden. If we can't get him in we just shout 'do you want some socks' and he comes belting inside.

I am so looking forward to reading your book and learning all about 'Rock'. Wishing you the best of luck. Enjoy the week ahead. This is your moment - relish every second.XX

Oh, Patti. You just made my eyes leak! Thank you so much for your kind words. I do hope you like the book.

Lhasa Apsos are SO adorable. Hysterical to name one after a wrestler! Tell your son that I was once alone in a lift with 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin. He just stared at me for about 4 floors, but didn't say anything. Nobody else got in. I thought 'who the heck IS he? Scary looking guy'. Anyhow. We got to the bottom floor, the doors opened and hundreds of fans rushed the lift. There were security guards everywhere. It was the oddest thing!

Waiting to see if any more comments arrive before I do the draw. Just saw this AMAZING dog story. A dog, washed away in the tsunami, has been found floating on a roof.
